The Water Diplomacy Center at the Jordan University of Science and Technology signed a cooperation agreement for a joint research project with the German Jordanian University entitled "The Transboundary Basaltic Blue Basin: Assessing Status, Potential, and Cross-border Cooperation."
This is part of the "Blue Peace Middle East 2.0 - Capacity Building (JUST-WDC)" project supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. The agreement was signed by Professor Dr. Majed Abu Zreik, Director of the Water Diplomacy Center at the Jordan University of Science and Technology, representing the university, and Dr. Qasim Abdel Aal, Dean of the Faculty of Natural Resources Engineering, representing the German Jordanian University.
The research project focuses on addressing the urgent need for effective transboundary water management in the Basaltic Blue Basin, a shared natural resource extending across Jordan, Syria, and Saudi Arabia. Due to the absence of a comprehensive control system, monitoring mechanisms, and equitable water-sharing agreements, this vital basin faces imminent threats of depletion and deteriorating water quality. These challenges have become a looming danger to local communities and policymakers in the region.
This project aims to enhance peace and cooperation in the Middle East and North Africa region. The collaborative initiative seeks to bring together researchers, academics, and government officials from neighboring countries to foster trust and mutual understanding by establishing applied and precise scientific research in this field.
Among the primary objectives of the project are gathering fundamental hydrological data, understanding groundwater flows, and developing a comprehensive regional numerical model. This involves intensifying constructive efforts that serve the desired goal in this area, alongside solidifying the principles of open constructive dialogue, peaceful coordination, and implementing an enhanced integrated water management system.
This project ensures sustainable and equitable use of the Basaltic Blue Basin for the benefit of all involved parties. It stems from joint efforts to implement the strategic plan of the center in activating research projects and enhancing water diplomacy capabilities in the region.
The Water Diplomacy Center at the Jordan University of Science and Technology is considered the regional center in the Middle East and North Africa for research, studies, and cooperation in the field of water and transboundary water diplomacy.
