Jordan University of Science and Technology and King Abdullah University Hospital Explore Latest Advances in Epilepsy Treatment
Under the patronage of Professor Khaled El-Salem, President of Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) and Chairman of the Board of Directors of King Abdullah University Hospital, the university's Faculty of Medicine, in collaboration with the hospital, organized a scientific day on epilepsy and abnormal brain electrical activity to mark World Epilepsy Day 2026.
The event brought together a distinguished group of neurologists and epilepsy specialists, along with academics, students, and healthcare professionals.
The scientific day featured Professor Hassan Hosny, Professor of Neurology at Cairo University and founder and president of the Egyptian Epilepsy Society, who delivered a lecture on epilepsy management in the Middle East. His presentation addressed key treatment challenges and highlighted the latest advances in diagnosing and treating epilepsy.
Prof. El-Salem emphasized the distinguished academic standing of JUST's Faculty of Medicine and its leading role in medical education across the region. He noted that the faculty's advanced educational environment and highly qualified academic staff have contributed to graduating generations of physicians serving in the healthcare sector.
He also pointed out that King Abdullah University Hospital has witnessed significant development, becoming one of the main pillars of Jordan's healthcare system. The hospital provides advanced medical services to four governorates in northern Jordan and played a major role during health crises, particularly the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrating its readiness and efficiency in delivering high-quality healthcare.
Meanwhile, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Professor Firas Qarqaz, stressed the importance of the scientific day in raising awareness about epilepsy as one of the most common neurological disorders. He explained that the event serves as a platform for exchanging expertise and reviewing the latest developments in diagnosis and treatment, contributing to the advancement of healthcare services and the improvement of patient care.
Dr. Ahmad Yaseen, Head of the Department of Neurology, announced the opening of an epilepsy monitoring unit within the Neurology Center to enhance diagnostic and treatment services and further develop specialized patient care.
The event also included specialized lectures delivered by physicians from JUST and King Abdullah University Hospital, focusing on the latest developments in epilepsy diagnosis and treatment, including drug-resistant epilepsy, minimally invasive surgical procedures, and vagus nerve stimulation therapy.
At the end of the event, Prof. El-Salem, accompanied by Dr. Hosny, toured the hospital's Neurology Department, where they reviewed its medical services and advanced equipment. Dr. Hosny expressed his admiration for the department's high standards and specialized neurological care, emphasizing the importance of continuing its development and advancement.
