Awareness projects at the celebration of Midwifery Day at Jordan University of Science and Technology.
The President of Jordan University of Science and Technology, Professor Khaled El-Salem, emphasized the importance of the midwifery profession and its humanitarian role in serving the community. This came during his patronage of the opening of an event titled “Midwifery for Humanity: Empowering Life and Advancing Global Goals," organized by the Faculty of Nursing on the occasion of the International Day of the Midwife, with the participation of a distinguished group of academics, specialists, and representatives of health and national institutions.
El-Salem noted that the university takes pride in the excellence of the Faculty of Nursing at both the national and regional levels, having established itself as a leading center for preparing qualified nursing and midwifery professionals in accordance with the highest international standards. He also highlighted the continuous support and pioneering role of Her Royal Highness Princess Muna Al Hussein in developing the nursing and midwifery sector, in addition to effective partnerships with the World Health Organization, the Jordanian Nursing Council, and the Higher Population Council, which have contributed to advancing academic programs, research, and training.
Professor Rowaida Al-Maaytah conveyed the greetings of Her Royal Highness Princess Muna Al Hussein—President of the Jordanian Nursing Council and Patron of Nursing and Midwifery at the World Health Organization for the Eastern Mediterranean Region—to attendees and students on the occasion of the International Day of Nursing and Midwifery. She expressed pride in Her Highness's message, which praised the vital role played by the nursing and midwifery sector in Jordan and worldwide.
In her message, Her Highness emphasized the significant efforts made by nursing and midwifery professionals in strengthening health systems and protecting communities. She stressed the importance of supporting them through investment in education, training, and leadership, as well as the development of forward-looking policies to advance the health sector and achieve universal health coverage. She also reaffirmed her continued support for the sector, commending the collective impact of its workforce and her firm commitment to developing the nursing and midwifery professions at all levels.
The Dean of the Faculty of Nursing, Professor Nihaya Al-Sheyyab, affirmed that the university continues to strengthen its leadership role in supporting the nursing and midwifery sector by advancing its academic programs and providing a modern educational and training environment aligned with global standards. She noted that the university hosts the only bachelor's degree program in midwifery in the Kingdom, serving as a distinguished model for preparing scientifically, professionally, and ethically qualified graduates to provide safe and comprehensive care for mothers and children.
The Secretary-General of the Jordanian Nursing Council, Prof. Hani Al-Nawafleh, expressed pride in the ongoing collaboration with the university, describing it as a leading institution in health education. He noted that this partnership contributes to the development of the nursing and midwifery professions and enhances the quality of education and training, ultimately improving healthcare services in Jordan.
Prof. Issa Al-Masarweh, Secretary-General of the Higher Population Council, emphasized that current population and health indicators in Jordan call for strengthening primary healthcare services—particularly midwifery, given its central role across all stages of reproductive health before, during, and after pregnancy. He highlighted the growing need to increase the number of qualified midwives in the coming years to meet population growth and rising healthcare demands.
On the sidelines of the event, El-Salem reviewed awareness projects presented by midwifery students, which included educational materials, models, and tools highlighting the role of midwives in maternal and child care and promoting health awareness within the community.
