Scientific day of the Department of Physiology and Biochemistry in the School of Medicine at Jordan University of Science and Technology

Scientific day of the Department of Physiology and Biochemistry in the School of Medicine at Jordan University of Science and Technology

Under the patronage of the dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Professor Nail Obeidat, the department of Physiology and Biochemistry held its “Scientific Day” on Thursday the 17th of March.

Professor Obeidat emphasized the role of such an event in bridging the gap between basic and clinical branches and the importance of holding these events to highlight the achievements of the faculty members and the students of the School of Medicine. Professor Obeidat then underlined the recent modifications of the Medical School curriculum that were made to allow the School of Medicine to foster student-based research projects.

Dr. Alfaqih, the acting chairperson of the Department of Physiology and Biochemistry, indicated that the major motivation that triggered organizing this day was the increasing significance of having a solid foundation in research for any physician who wishes to practice Medicine in the 21st century. He added that “with the introduction of next generation sequencing and the recent advances in gene therapy, a previously abstract concept like personalized medicine is now part of routine clinical practice”.

The event started with three presentations from faculty members of the department that focused on the molecular aspects of cancer and their applications in therapy and diagnosis presented by Professor Nayef Gharaibeh, Dr. Mahmoud A. Alfaqih and Dr. Heba Ghozlan. This was followed by a special event called “students have a say” where Medical students were given the opportunity to present some of their own research findings on the general topic of cancer.

The event concluded with a round table discussion between faculty members of the Department and the Medical students. The discussion focused on the importance of instigating a change in the way Medical doctors view their role in the society from pure physicians into physician-scientists. It also discussed some of the ways the students can make benefit of the research opportunities available in the department and the Faculty of Medicine as a whole.
