Jordan University of Science and Technology is Awarded a new US Patent

Dr. Rana Obaidat from the Faculty of Pharmacy at the Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) has been awarded a new patent by the United States Patent and Trademarks Office (USPTO) titled: "Process of Producing and Method of Using Soluble High Molecular-Weight Chitosan" Dr. Rana Obaidat is an associate professor of Pharmaceutical Technology at Faculty of Pharmacy at JUST. She has more than twenty publications in peer-reviewed international journals. Dr. Obeidat explained that the patent is in the field of developing chitosan polymer and preparing it with high solubility in water. The innovative method, which is made using supercritical fluid technology, maintains the large molecular weight of the chitosan polymer. This method is expected to open new horizons for the industrial applications of this polymer, including a rapid production process using green technology. This innovation method was developed at JUST laboratories and in collaboration with Dr. Adnan Badwan, the general manager of the Jordanian Manufacturing Company. Dr. Badwan is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Center of Excellence for Innovative Projects at JUST and has more than 200 scientific publications and patents. It is worth mentioning that this has been the second US patent for JUST in less than a year. The Technology Transfer Office at the Center of Excellence for Innovative Projects is currently working on filing a PCT application to allow for international coverage of the patent in order to be able to commercialize it worldwide; along with following up on other filed patent applications that are still under evaluation.
