JUST awarded 5-star university status

Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) was awarded 5-Stars rating in a recently concluded QS Stars audit by QS Quacquarelli Symonds from the UK. The QS Stars rating evaluates universities across a wide range of important performance indicators as set against pre-established international standards. By covering a broader range of criteria than any world ranking exercise, QS Stars shines a light on both the excellence and the diversity of the rated institution.

JUST received the award at a special function held at the Irbid campus, where Mr Ashwin Fernandes, Regional Director for QS in the Middle East presented the certificate to Prof Omar Al-Jarrah, President of JUST.  With the conclusion of this audit, JUST has received top overall rating in Jordan and holds on par status with some of the top universities in the world.

Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) from the UK, founded in 1990, is the world's leading network for top careers and education. QS is also considered as the most trusted independent source of global intelligence on the higher education sector. QS has been producing rankings since the launch of the QS World University Rankings in 2004. QS also produces regional university rankings for Arab region, Asia, Latin America, BRICS etc.

The QS Stars evaluation is a comprehensive audit which has rated over 280 universities in over 50 countries. It is one of the most recognised international evaluations of universities, which has been designed to look at the institution at a deeper level. The QS Stars audit evaluates an institution in over 50 different indicators, and awards universities between 1 and 5 stars plus, overall as well in categories. The ratings once conducted are valid for three years.

The target audience of the audit results are prospective students, to help them get a wider picture of an institution's qualities, looking at everything from the employability of graduates, to sports facilities and community engagement. It is designed to reflect the nuanced mission of universities, and the needs of students who may be interested in things other than those to which traditional rankings are necessarily limited.

JUST completed the audit to the satisfaction of QS analysts who studied data over a period of 6 months, to conclude that JUST has met the set standards to be awarded 5 Stars overall, as well as 5 Stars in 6 categories, namely Teaching, Employability, Internationalisation, Facilities, Innovation and Inclusiveness.

On this occasion, Mr Ashwin Fernandes, Regional Director for QS said "It is not just a proud moment for Jordan University of Science and Technology, but also a significant achievement for Jordan as a country. The first audit for JUST was done in 2012 and it was rated 3-Stars, after which the administration continued to improve upon the suggestions in our development roadmap, and here today I am very happy to see that the re-audit shows significant improvement with them reaching 5-Stars status. There are still areas of improvement, namely research and subject strengths, and I look forward to these areas being tackled soon".

JUST President added that "Since its establishment in 1986, JUST has been at the forefront of higher education in the Arab World and the Middle East region. It maintains a high reputation due to its distinguished faculty, administrative staff, multi-disciplinary educational system and broad diversity of students."
