Minister of Government Communication at Jordan University of Science and Technology: Universities Are a Cornerstone of National Awareness

The Minister of Government Communication and official government spokesperson, His Excellency Dr. Mohammad Al-Momani, emphasized that Jordanian universities are a cornerstone in building national awareness, describing them as beacons of thought and platforms for shaping individuals capable of understanding, engagement, and assuming responsibility. He noted that the media is a key partner in strengthening national belonging and reinforcing trust between citizens and state institutions.

Dr. Al-Momani made these remarks during a lecture entitled “The Media and Its Role in Promoting Citizenship Values in Society," organized by the Directorate of Education and Military Culture in cooperation with Jordan University of Science and Technology. The event was attended by the University President, Prof. Khaled El-Salem; the Director of Education and Military Culture, Brigadier General Saleh Al-Khalayleh; a number of academic and administrative staff members; and a large group of students.

He explained that amid rapid digital transformations and the growing flow of information, the media is no longer merely a transmitter of events, but has become an influential tool in shaping public opinion and directing societal attitudes. He warned of the increasing spread of false, misleading, and inaccurate information, stressing the shared responsibility to raise awareness and verify information through reliable and credible sources.

Dr. Al-Momani added that informed citizenship is built on understanding, verification, and responsible participation. He underscored the importance of strengthening Jordanian national identity, fostering social responsibility and volunteerism among youth, and reinforcing the values of cooperation, tolerance, and social cohesion as essential pillars for building a modern Jordan and enhancing its societal resilience.

For his part, the President of Jordan University of Science and Technology, Prof.  Khaled El-Salem, affirmed the university's belief in its national and developmental role as an academic institution that contributes to shaping a well-informed Jordanian citizen and promoting the values of citizenship, belonging, and responsibility among students. He highlighted the university's commitment to hosting national and intellectual figures and organizing dialogue-based activities that raise youth awareness of current challenges and enhance their critical thinking and positive engagement in serving the nation.

Prof. El-Salem added that the university places the scientific and intellectual empowerment of students at the forefront of its priorities, preparing them to become positive opinion leaders within their communities. This is achieved through a supportive university environment that encourages free and responsible dialogue, as well as curricula and extracurricular activities that refine students' personalities and strengthen their national awareness. He stressed the importance of partnership between universities and state institutions in consolidating the concepts of active citizenship and building a generation capable of facing challenges with a spirit of belonging, responsibility, and teamwork.

The event concluded with an open discussion between Dr. Al-Momani and the students, during which he responded to their questions regarding the role of the media in the current phase, the challenges facing media discourse in the digital sphere, and strategies for combating rumors and misinformation.
