Students from the Jordan University of Science and Technology took first place in the programming competition for first-year students at Jordanian universities, which was held at the University of Jordan under the patronage of its president, His Excellency Prof. Nazir Obeidat, with the participation of 67 teams representing 17 Jordanian universities.

The victory was achieved by a team consisting of students Basil Aqil, Ahmad Shatnawi, and Laith Al-Badour, with student Uday Qahwaji serving as coach. Under the supervision of Dr. Malak Abdullah, the team secured first place and won a cash prize of 250 Jordanian dinars. The university also placed seventh and tenth, securing three spots in the top ten of this competition.

On this occasion, the Dean of the College of Computer and Information Technology, Prof. Munir Bani Yassin, congratulated the winning students, their coach, and the supervisors, praising their outstanding efforts that led to this achievement and emphasizing that this success reflects the approach the college has adopted in preparing its students from the very beginning of their university studies.

Bani Yassin noted that the college has adopted a teaching methodology focused on building practical programming skills among first-year students, with all students undergoing intensive programming training starting in the first semester. Additionally, a portion of the grades for certain courses is allocated to practical exams conducted offline, with the aim of enhancing students’ ability to think programmatically and solve problems independently.

He added that the widespread use of artificial intelligence tools may lead some students to rely on them excessively; however, the college’s practical teaching and assessment methods ensure the development of fundamental programming skills and prepare students to compete effectively in local and international competitions.

This is the first programming competition of its kind in Jordan for first-year students. It is aimed at incoming freshmen and encourages them to develop their programming skills from the outset of their university experience, while fostering a spirit of competition and creativity.
