Jordan University of Science and Technology achieves an unprecedented global milestone with its first patent outside the United States in the field of cerebral catheters
The Jordan University of Science and Technology has achieved an unprecedented global scientific breakthrough, after being granted a recognized patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office for an innovative medical technology in the field of cerebral catheterization. It has thus become the first university outside the United States to register a patent in this highly specialized medical field, in a move that reflects the advanced standing that Jordanian scientific research has attained at the international level. This achievement was the result of a research project led by Dr. Khaled Alawneh, a researcher and the originator of the idea, who is a professor at the Faculty of Medicine and a cerebral catheterization consultant at King Abdullah the Founder University Hospital. He succeeded in developing a new therapeutic technique after more than ten years of continuous research and scientific work, the project originated from the treatment of a rare medical condition in a ten-year-old child who suffered from a complex hemorrhagic fistula resulting in a direct connection between the external carotid arteries and the veins of the brain and face, which caused a pulsating hematoma to form outside the skull.
The patent relates to the development of a new technique based on micro-cerebral catheterization and the use of medical devices within cerebral blood vessels for the first time worldwide; previously, their use had been limited to peripheral blood vessels, representing a quantum leap in the treatment of this type of complex vascular malformation. The results of this technique were published in one of the world's leading medical journals specializing in cerebral catheterization, before the Centre of Excellence for Innovative Projects at the Jordan University of Science and Technology took charge of the intellectual property dossier and completed the patent registration procedures with the United States Patent and Trademark Office – a process that took four years, involving rigorous scientific and legal reviews until final approval was granted for the patent to be registered in the name of Jordan, represented by the Jordan University of Science and Technology.
This achievement underscores the ability of Jordanian researchers to compete on the global stage and reinforces the standing of the Jordan University of Science and Technology as a leading institution in scientific research and innovation, it also exemplifies the success of the university's system in supporting innovative ideas and transforming them into globally recognized innovations that contribute to the development of medical sciences and serve humanity.
