Internal Medicine for 6Th Year Medical Students

This is an 8-week course in internal medicine. During this period final year medical students will advance their skills in this field.

The course is divided into to periods.

Period I (4 weeks) will be spent at Prince Rashid Hospital. Students will have daily 2-hour bedside teaching round. Students will be exposed to a variety of general medical problems and spend the morning in interviewing patients and performing focused and complete physical examination.

Period II (4 weeks) will be spent at King Abdullah University Hospital where they will be divided into small groups (3-4 per teaching staff). Students will rotate every week. In each team they will expected to participate in the daily management rounds supervised by a staff member. During these rounds, the students acquire the skill of taking appropriate history, conducting proper physical exam, and management of patients with various medical problems.

Throughout the course students will have 13 interactive seminars that cover a wide variety of common and important medical problems.

Students should attend the weekly activities of the department ("Flee Market", "Case Presentation", "Board review") and the daily "Morning Report".

Students are expected to do in-house calls at King Abdullah University Hospital

    Course Objectives

1.      Interview patients and perform a complete or focused physical examination

2.      Consolidate their clinical knowledge of abnormal physical findings

3.      Perform analysis of clinical and laboratory information to develop appropriate differential diagnosis

4.      Improve their presentation skills in describing the chief problems and a plan for treatment.

5.      Spend in-house calls and prepare a complete history and physical examination for new patient admitted to the service

6.      Periodically follow up patients' status including interpretation of new findings

7.      Prepare and present case reports in the "Flee Market" activity

8.      Use and interpret laboratory and radiographic tests used in diagnosing common disease (able to read chest radiograph, EKG, etc…)

9.      Recognize and manage situations related to common emergencies

10.  Identify ethical problems which arise in patient treatment and care

11.  All students should meet or exceed the faculty of medicine standards
