About the Instrument The Attension Theta Lite is a sophisticated laboratory instrument designed to measure contact angle and surface tension. By performing high-precision video analysis of static or pendant drops, the system characterizes liquid-solid interactions and interfacial properties with extreme accuracy.
Measurements & Analysis The instrument provides a comprehensive suite of measurements to characterize surface and liquid interactions, most notably: - Contact Angle: The angle formed at the intersection of the liquid, solid, and gas phases. This measurement determines the "wettability" of a surface; an angle of less than 90° indicates a hydrophilic (water-attracting) surface, while an angle greater than 90° indicates a hydrophobic (water-repellent) surface.
- Surface Free Energy (SFE): Quantifies the chemical potential of a solid surface to interact or bond with other materials.
- Surface and Interfacial Tension: Determined using the "Pendant Drop" method. The system analyzes the geometry of a drop while it is suspended from a needle in the air (for surface tension) or within another liquid (for interfacial tension).
- Dynamic Contact Angles: The measurement of Advancing and Receding angles. These values are essential for understanding surface roughness, chemical heterogeneity, and contact angle hysteresis.
