About the Instrument​

The Malvern Zetasizer Nano ZS90 is a widely used laboratory instrument designed to measure particle size, zeta potential, and molecular weight. It primarily uses Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) with a 90-degree scattering angle.


Measurements & Analysis

  • Particle Size & Polydispersity: The instrument uses Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) to measure the Brownian motion of particles. It calculates the hydrodynamic diameter using the Stokes-Einstein equation and evaluates size distribution alongside the Polydispersity Index (PdI) via a Cumulants analysis.
  • Zeta Potential: It measures electrophoretic mobility using a combination of slow and fast field reversals (M3-PALS). This calculates the charge at the slipping plane, providing essential data regarding the colloidal stability of your samples over time.
  • Molecular Weight: By employing Static Light Scattering (SLS), it generates Debye plots to yield absolute weight-average molecular weights as well as the second virial coefficient which indicates solution stability and solubility.
