The College of Information Technology at Jordan University of Science and Technology offers an undergraduate data science program. The program proposes a pioneering plan at the regional level that includes courses related to market needs, the latest scientific research findings, the latest techniques of artificial intelligence, machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, natural language processing, big data science, smart robots, information security, and others.

The Dean of the College, Professor Munir Bani Yassin, said that the university seeks to include the best competencies in the teaching and research staff and to benefit from specialized consultants from industry inside and outside Jordan to develop the program and the quality of its outputs and to conclude partnerships and cooperation agreements with several institutions. He stated that the university provides dedicated laboratories for data science students, equipped with the latest data science technologies and GPUs. He pointed out that the university motivates students to carry out pioneering and creative projects and ideas and participate in programming and robotics competitions.

The program plan includes training hours in local and international companies to develop students’ skills in preparation for their entry into the labor market. A data science expert (or data scientist) works in many jobs such as data analyst, data engineer, machine learning engineer, business intelligence engineer, and others. Since data science serves various fields, data scientists work in various locations such as health, educational, financial, administrative, and industrial institutions, technology and communications companies, social media networks, and others.

Data science combines statistics, mathematics, and computer science. It uses data to answer questions and form perceptions of complex problems that would otherwise require human intervention. There are many examples of products and tools that use data science techniques, such as ChatGPT, Siri, Google Translate, Instagram Filters, and autonomous vehicles. Data science has truly revolutionized various areas of life in the past few years. Which called for various small and giant companies such as Microsoft, Google, Meta, and many countries to invest billions of dollars in data science applications. Data science has seen a significant increase in the number of jobs offered in recent years, with the US Bureau of Labor Statistics predicting that 11.5 billion new jobs will be added over the next three years. According to the employment site Indeed, the average annual income of a data scientist this year was $124,000, which is higher than the average income of a software engineer, which is $116,000.
