This course will investigate the role of language and literacy in educational practice, considering how both theories about language and institutional practices affect the ways language is used and taught in educational settings. We aim to explore aspects of both the role of language in learning and the learning of language. The course will look at language teaching from a range of perspectives, encouraging students to consider the effects of the historical, socio-cultural and local contexts on language teaching practices. Students will have opportunities to develop their skills in analysing language data from classroom contexts as well as their understanding of teaching and learning.
