This course aims to familiarize students with the study of language from the point of view of the user, especially the choices he makes, the constraints he encounters in social interaction, and the effects his use of language has on the other participants in an act of communication. It will cover such topics as context (both linguistic and physical), deictic expressions, presupposition, speech acts, etc.
