The faculty of medicine at Jordan University of Science and Technology had major contributions to the community of Irbid by many ways:
-
Conducting lectures by the staff to educate physicians in their community on many common medical problems, developing high index of suspicion for serious infections on any ill child, prevention and proper management of these problems. This involves documenting the problem and reporting it to the appropriate health authorities. Educate the community on the importance of vaccine in preventing certain type of diseases like meningitis, polio etc. Involvement is at many levels extending far beyond the research aspect of this exercise. Education at many levels is undertaken, including GPs and primary health care physicians at the Province of Irbid. A debriefing seminar takes place many times at the medical association center of Irbid and few hospitals in Amman.
-
Through participating in the national and international societies. Particularly the national charity societies. Annually we participate in many free medical days inside and outside Irbid city. Attention is drawn to common diseases like asthma and others. Also the faculty contributes in eradication of infectious disease like poliomyelitis as part of national program. Our university staff was involved in the early detection of the first few cases and involved at a national level in the prevention of this problem as well as they are involved in the national committee of diagnosing case and eradication.
-
Through publishing outstanding studies on many community based problems. Meningitis, asthma, anemia, poisoning, febrile convulsion, epilepsy and others have been studied locally by the staff of the faculty.
-
An active attempt has been made on Childhood Disabilities. This was a common problem as we lack the screening program for inborn error of metabolism and other early diagnostic screening program for neonates. A manual for early detection of these disabilities to the third world countries has developed by the faculty staff and forwarded by the UNICEF to all third world countries. Many workshops done to GPs and primary health care physicians on how to use this manual and what to do next. This will help to reduce and improve disabilities in the community.
-
Through developing educating manual to the parents and patients on the common medical problems. Effort have centered on surveillance and documented epidemiology of Childhood Epilepsy in the city of Irbid. This is a common problem because of high rate of consanguineous marriages in Jordan. Our staff developed a manual about Epilepsy to the parents sponsored by Jordanian Epilepsy Society. This manual was aimed to educate the community about Epilepsy. A similar manual was developed about Febrile Convulsion. Effort was centered on studying the relation of first febrile seizure and anemia. Febrile convulsion was common in Jordan and because of its association with epilepsy; different studies have conducted trying to highlight certain risk factor of febrile convulsion. Because of that a controlled study was done to assess the role of iron status to first febrile seizure.
-
Through the development of centers of Excellency in
King Abdullah University Hospital (KAUH) which is affiliated to the faculty of Medicine. People of Irbid used to suffer from the referral due to medical problem to Amman. Now by having most of the subspecialties at KAUH and centers like cardiology, respiratory , neurophysiology ..etc, serve the community in direct and indirect way.
-
By having the faculty of Medicine Scientific days which centered on educating GPs and other physicians in the city of Irbid as well as many other scientific activities. This pooled directly or indirectly on serving the community of Irbid.
-
By having many of the faculty staff talking to people in the community through the public media (TV and Radio). They discuss many of the important medical issues like vaccination, asthma, epilepsy, anemia ..etc with the people, receive and answer their queries.
-
Many of our staff work with national and international societies like Operation Smile group who did many operations in cleft lip and palate and cosmetic surgery for many patients in different areas in Jordan
