CURRICULUM

FOR

HIGHER SECIALIZATION IN ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY

 

The Higher Specialization Degree in Orthopaedic Surgery is granted by the FACULTY OF POST GRADUATE STUDIS in JORDAN UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY after the completion of academic and training requirement according to the following assigned program

 

1.    REGISTRATION IN THE PROGRAM

The acceptance of the student in this program is according to regulation of granting the higher specialization certificate in medicine issued by the deans' council number (26/94) dated 3/7/1994

 

2.    DURATION

 

Minimum 5 academic years and maximum 6 academic years

 

3.    PROGRAM REQUIREMENT

 

Completion of five training years in all specialties of orthopaedic surgery according to the curriculum approved by the special surgery department.

The program for each year is as follows

 

a-    First year (12 credit hours)

 

The first year is spent in the general surgery facilities, during which the resident should know

-          principles of surgery

-          pre and post op care

-          clerking and documentation

-          performing the work up for the patients

-          assisting in the operating room

 

b-    Second year (12 credit hours)

 

The resident, under the supervision of senior resident and the consultant, does the following tasks

-          Pre and post operative care

-          Complete documentation of patient's history, follow up etc…

-          Doing the work up of the patient

-          Assisting in surgical procedure which is determined by the department

-          Attending the course (design of clinical research) which is a three credit hours and passing with a mark not less than 70%

 

c-     Third year (12 credit hours)

 

The responsibilities of the resident is increased in regard of complexity of the surgical procedures and his duties in it as

-          start to act as first assistant in major surgeries

-          perform (with supervision) minor surgical procedures

-          teaching of medical students

 

d-    Fourth year (12 credit hours)

 

The resident is directly responsible for

-          patient's care

-          performing more difficult surgical procedures

-          teaching of medical students

 

e-     Fifth year (12 credit hours)

 

       The resident in his final year has the following responsibilities

-          assessment and diagnosis of various orthopaedic conditions

-          determining the lab and radiology work up for the patients

-          interpretation of lab and radiology results

-          the ability to perform the proper surgical procedure

-          leading and assisting his junior colleagues

-          teaching of medical students

 

     4. RESEARCH

during the training period the resident should

-          participate in research project with the one or more of the staff members or participate in publishing or accepting a scientific paper in an indexed journal before three months of the completion of his fourth year

-          participate in all scientific activities of the department
