The objectives of the Department of Physiology and Biochemistry can be divided into teaching and research objectives:
Introduce the Medical student to the various organ systems operating within the human body with an emphasis on their role in maintaining homeostasis. This goal is achieved by offering a series of core courses in Physiology, Biochemistry and Genetics and via participation in several modular-based courses that integrate all basic medical disciplines. The department also aims to introduce the student to the homeostatic and Biochemical changes that accompany different disease states and to the principal biochemical investigations used for diagnosing diseases and monitoring their progression.
Inflict a culture of change, innovation and creativity in the local community and the region by participating in Biochemistry/Physiology research projects that serve the local and international scientific communities. The department have also established a core Molecular Genetics service lab that provides researchers in the Basic Science departments with the services, expertise and consultations required to complete any genetic component of their research projects.
