This is a general Biochemistry course for first year medical students. In this series of lectures, students will be introduced to the fundamental concepts of how cells work at the molecular and sub-molecular levels. Course content reflects subjects such as: patterns of structure, function and metabolism of macromolecules, metabolic pathways of small molecules and the integration of metabolism within and between various tissues. Additionally, the course will also cover cell communication strategies such as hormonal communication and signal transduction. Case studies will be routinely introduced to help integrate biochemical and cellular concepts with bedside teaching and enhance our understanding of systemic pathology. Modern molecular techniques will be examined as they are applied in the study of disease etiology, diagnosis and treatment interventions.
