PH104: Community Nutrition (3C,3H)
The course is in English. It is designed as an elective course for the non-nursing and non-medical students at JUST. It is particularly relevant to those who attain the basic background knowledge in biological sciences, e.g. pharmacy, dentistry, biology, agriculture, and biomedical students. Teaching starts with highlighting the principles of normal nutrition as based on the definitions of nutrients, metabolism, and the food groups. Based on this, it continues focusing on nutrition in normal situations, beginning with defining energy balance as a determinant of body mass index. In the first place, the course particularly makes emphasis on the maternal and child nutritional health with special focus on infants and breast feeding. In the second place, some nutrition guidelines relevant to the major diseases that are of public health significance (e.g., diabetes) are highlighted .
