Course Description

Introduction to anatomy and embryology course consists of both lectures and laboratory sessions. The course is intended to provide an introduction to the fundamental concepts of gross anatomy, including definitions, subdivisions, and the approaches to study gross anatomy, medical terminology and medical imaging techniques. This will be followed by a systematic study of the human body covering general shape, structure, and location of all organs related to different systems as a basis for the topographic study of anatomy, which will be discussed in different subsequent modules. Meanwhile, the functional aspects of human anatomy will be integrated with the structure, and the clinical significance of anatomical relationships will be introduced when appropriate. Additionally, the course will introduce students to basic concepts of general embryology. Hence, students will be introduced to the major events taking place during gametogenesis, fertilization, implantation, and subsequent changes during the first eight weeks of development. Furthermore, mechanisms of morphogenesis and development of congenital anomalies will be discussed as far as needed for subsequent study of specific embryology related to modules, including the development of the various systems and associated congenital anomalies.
