Upon successful completion of 117 credit hours, students are required to engage in practical training, typically during the summer, for 8 weeks within an industrial environment relevant to aeronautical engineering. This practical training is commonly undertaken after finishing the fourth year and before embarking on capstone and elective courses. The primary objective of this training is to apply the theoretical knowledge acquired in earlier coursework to real-world situations under the guidance of experienced engineers.
Practical training serves as a valuable opportunity to enhance problem-solving skills, emphasizing quality considerations, professional and ethical responsibilities, as well as safety and environmental aspects of science and technology. It also provides hands-on experience with modern engineering tools, techniques, and skills.
The evaluation of practical training involves several components overseen by the Aeronautical Engineering (AE) department and the hosting institution:
- Placement and Pre-training Guidance:
- Students are placed in relevant industrial settings for their training, and guidance is provided before the commencement of the training period.
- Supervised Activities:
- Students maintain a logbook detailing their activities, which is regularly reviewed and signed by their supervisor.
- Training Report Submission:
- Trainees are required to submit a comprehensive report at the end of their training period.
- Faculty Monitoring:
- An assigned faculty member conducts a plant trip to monitor and enhance the daily or weekly activities of students during summer practice. This faculty member reports periodically to the department, with this monitoring process initiated in the summer of 2012.
- Supervisor Feedback:
- Feedback from the supervisor, typically the training engineer, is an integral part of the evaluation process.
Beyond practical training, instructors organize periodic educational visits and trips to local aeronautical plants. These visits aim to deepen students' understanding of the aeronautical industry, drawing connections to their regular AE courses and senior project design courses. Notable locations visited in recent years include Jordan Aircraft Maintenance Company (JorAMCo), Jordan Air Motive Ltd Company (JALCO), Jordan Design and Development Bureau (JODDB), and the Jordanian Air Forces.
