Department Profile
The Department of City Planning and Design (CPD) is part of the College of Architecture and Design at JUST. It offers a Bachelor's degree in City Planning and Design as well as a Master's degree in Planning and Urban Studies (MPUS). In the first two years of the bachelor's degree, our students share the same fundamental courses with all other college students. This is made in order to make sure that a preliminary design foundation is fulfilled after which students are directed to take classes in Urban Planning. The curriculum of CPD is a program structured to encompass a multitude of classes pertaining to wholesome knowledge in urban planning. Our faculty members have varied areas of interest which include Urban Planning, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, Housing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Conservation, and Urban Anthropology. The MPUS program is rich in its research topics. An average of 10 students are admitted each year. They are directed to provide local and international urban planning research and problem-solving. Due to the multidisciplinary nature of the research, supervision is sometimes shared by external faculty from various research backgrounds such as transportation planning, artificial intelligence, sociology, geography, etc. Many of our alumni are currently working for international organizations such as the UN and World Bank. Several are serving regional planning endeavors in growing cities such as the Gulf city regions and local authorities.
Mission
Subsequent accelerating growth rates in modern cities emphasized the need for integrated action plans for vernacular and future urbanism and urged the need to provide essential remedies for inherited problems. Some cities in Jordan are historical settlements dating back to prehistory, and others are emergent settlements reflecting the need to dwell in certain localities. However, most of these cities developed by contiguous cellular growth with little planning. These facts inflicted the quality of life in cities of the region as well.
