The Department of Plant Production was established in September 1990. The Department offers undergraduate and graduate programs leading to the degrees of Bachelor of Science in Plant Production and Master's of Science in two specializations: Horticulture and Crop Science and Plant Protection.
Faculty members in our Department have a wide spectrum of specialties and research and teaching interests. Areas of expertise include the following: agronomy and crop sciences, plant breeding and genetics, plant biology and physiology, plant biotechnology, horticultural sciences (vegetables, fruit trees, floriculture and landscaping), plant pathology, applied entomology, beekeeping, weed science, plant Ecology, agricultural mechanization, agricultural economics and agri-business management and agricultural extension and technology transfer.
With this wide spectrum of specialty of our faculty members, our undergraduate programs are designed to produce well-rounded graduates with adequate knowledge and practice in most areas involved in the production and management of most crops. Our undergraduate curriculum focuses on providing students with both science and practice and most of our classes have practical sections as well as field practices. As a graduation requirement, our students spend two summer terms in practical training. The Department conducts annual training programs using the University farms and facilities as well as the private sector enterprises.
Our graduates usually find employment opportunities in the private sector as production mangers of farms, orchards and nurseries of vegetable crops, fruit trees and in the floriculture industry. A good percentage of our graduates have become managers and salespersons for agricultural companies in Jordan and the neighboring countries.
In addition, many of our graduates are employed by the Ministry of Agriculture and the National Agricultural Research Center (NARC) as extension agents, project leaders and researchers.
Wonderful success stories of our graduates starting their own agri-business inspire many of our graduates to become self-employed and start their own business after getting practical experiences working for successful agri-business enterprises.
