The Student Union is an elected student body that represents all university students. It engages in activities that concern students and helps address their issues in cooperation and coordination with the university administration. The goal is to ensure the students' well-being, provided that it does not conflict with the university's rules, regulations, and guidelines. The Union operates under the instructions issued by the University Council in accordance with Article (9) of the Jordanian Universities Law No. (29) of 1987. These instructions were formulated and approved by an elected student committee, the Dean of Student Affairs, and a higher committee established for this purpose.
Union Objectives:
-To contribute to the development of a well-rounded student personality that is aware of national, Jordanian, and Arab interests within the framework of Arab-Islamic culture, and to foster positive interaction between the student body, departments, faculties, university staff, faculty members, employees, and the university administration, thereby supporting and advancing the academic process.
-To coordinate with elected student bodies in other Jordanian universities.
-To strengthen relations with student unions, organizations, and institutions on Arab, Islamic, and international levels, in a manner that aligns with the Union's goals and complies with the university's regulations and laws.
-To focus on student issues, follow up on them, and work towards resolving their problems in collaboration with the university administration.
-To support and enhance cultural, scientific, social, athletic, and student activities, improving their effectiveness and impact.
-To promote unity, strengthen national cohesion, and reject sectarian, regional, and racial divisions.
-To foster a democratic atmosphere for dialogue and respect for diverse opinions.
-To engage constructively with the local community, including both official and unofficial institutions, in a way that supports Jordan's progress, resilience, and prosperity.
-To support the causes of the Arab and Islamic nations, particularly the Palestinian cause, and to work towards supporting the resilience of the Palestinian people.
Overview of Union Elections:
The election process for the council takes place in the fifth week of the second semester each year, as announced by the High Election Committee. The council elections are conducted as follows:
-Each faculty within the university is considered a single electoral district. Students enrolled in each faculty elect their representatives to the council based on proportional representation and established rounding rules, ensuring fairness and proper representation. This means that students in each department elect their representatives from among the candidates for that department in a designated ballot box.
-For every 1,000 students in a department, one representative is elected to the council. For every additional 500 students or more, an additional representative is elected.
-The elected representatives from all departments within a faculty choose a chairperson for the faculty committee by voting, with the candidate receiving the highest number of votes becoming the chairperson.
-Each department or faculty is guaranteed a minimum of one representative.
-Elections are held on the university campus through a direct, secret ballot within the electoral district on a single day, with voting starting at 8:00 AM and ending at 5:00 PM.
-The Deanship has introduced an electronic candidacy service through the university's website to save time and effort, making the process more convenient for students. Those wishing to withdraw can also do so electronically via the university website. The website allows candidates to confirm their eligibility and acceptance electronically, according to the set conditions. Each department will have one or more candidates, depending on the number of students. The website also publishes the lists of candidates, election committees, available seats, and the names of eligible voters.
