The Event

Computer software industry has grown tremendously in the past few years; software products are virtually being used by everyone. In the light of such growth and the critical role of software, a set of ethical and legal codes must be put to ensure that the general population enjoys the advancement of software without being a victim to large software corporations. Open Source Initiative (OSI) and Free Software Foundation (FSF) are two movements that focus on the people’s right to use software products freely without the high costs imposed by software companies, and more importantly they focus on the principle that the source code must be available to everybody to modify, recompile, or port to new environments.

Open Source Day in an event that will be held in Jordan University of Science and Technology. The event aims to spread the culture of Open Source, and to shed light on other movements that follow the same principles. The organizers of the event wish that the event will draw more attention towards the ethical dimensions behind OSI and FSF and to clear previous misconceptions about these two movements.

The event will constitute of lectures presented by companies’ representatives, government agencies, and members of the Open Source Group, a documentary will be screened, and an UBUNTU ® Linux installation festival.
