Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) has been accepted as an observer member of the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST), which is only for European-member institutions.
The European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) provides the funding for the creation of research networks, called COST Actions. These networks offer an open space for collaboration among scientists across Europe (and beyond) and thereby give impetus to research advancements and innovation. It has been contributing decisively to the internationalization process of research and innovation communities and to European cooperation in science and technology. COST is actively engaged in bringing together all relevant stakeholders that can provide added value to tackle different societal challenges. Global cooperation is based on an ascertained mutual benefit that ensures the advancement of scientific fields in which partners are working in.
Researchers from Near Neighbour Countries (NNCs), such as Jordan, and International Partner Countries can also take part in COST Actions, based on mutual benefit. Thus, joining a member of NNC to COST requires a nomination of the COST Action Chair to that member, who will then be asked to submit the profile of his/her institution. COST Members, 39 members, then vote on the nomination. Jordan University of Science and Technology and the Applied Scientific Research Fund were nominated in 2018 by the COST Action chair, and both of them were accepted to be observer members. Maximum two institutions from any NNC can join a COST Action.
Prof Saeb Khresat, President of JUST, indicted that joining COST is a proof of the high reputation of JUST at the international level. He emphasized on the importance of joining such associations in order to be global and internationalized. Moreover, he said, JUST is supporting the efforts of its staff to establish cooperation at the regional and international levels. These efforts contributed to the advancement of JUST on the international ranking, where JUST was ranked among the top 400 universities and advanced 144 points in the US News Global for 2019.
Professor Fahmi Abu Al-Rub, the contact person of JUST at COST, showed his pride to join COST. Abu Al-Rub said that it is a great opportunity for Jordan to be a part of COST Actions, as it will "pave the way to or establish synergies with EU-funded research projects. Collaboration within research projects often lead to new Actions, thus enhancing the networking potential of research consortia".
