Crown Prince Puts Final Touch on Mini Satellite Project

HRH Crown Prince Hussein took part in the final touches to the launch of the first Jordanian mini satellite and participated  in the installation of the last piece.

Irbid, October 23 - His Highness Prince Al Hussein Bin Abdullah II, the Crown Prince, who made a visit to the Institute of Nanotechnology at Jordan  University of Science and Technology on Monday, took part in the final touches to launching the first Jordanian miniature satellite. This mini satellite was designed and built locally by engineering students in Jordanian Universities under the supervision of the Crown Prince Foundation (CPF).

His Highness participated in the installation of the last piece of the mini satellite, which comes within CPF's Masar initiative, which aims to guide young people towards space science and related research, and provide training and research opportunities in the field of satellite engineering and design of space missions.

The satellite is scheduled to be launched in the first quarter of next year, and is designed to achieve educational research objectives in the first place. It is also aimed to promote the Kingdom to tourists by broadcasting images of touristic and heritage sites, and communicate wirelessly with earth stations around the world. The Crown Prince recorded an audio message in the Nanotechnology Institute, which will be later uploaded to the satellite's memory and broadcast in space, to be available for reception by all terrestrial receivers in the world. The satellite carries the name JY1-SAT to commemorate His Majesty the Late King Hussein, for his radio call was JY1.

 His Highness listened to a presentation by Masar initiative organizer Sanad Haddad, who said that the plan was proposed by Jordanian students who participated in the first batch of the cooperation programme with the US space agency NASA. The interns had suggested the design and launch of the first Jordanian satellite CubeSat, one of the smallest satellites made.

On the sidelines of the visit, His Highness the Crown Prince reviewed a number of pioneering and innovative projects and initiatives carried out by students of the Jordan University of Science and Technology, including the projects of Formula cars, the design of an unmanned automated system, the hybrid system of distillation and solar heating, the design and construction of robots for school students, and the electronic newspaper of the students of the university.

 

For his part, President of Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) , Prof. Omar Jarrah briefed the Prince on the achievements of the university, including reaching a 5-star rating alongside 62 universities in the world out of 25 thousand universities in the fields of education and employment, scientific research and international programs according to the QS World University Rankings, as well as achieving the first position  among the Arab universities by the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking

Dr. Al Jarrah said that the university has made impressive success   in the move towards  a higher  position  in the QS World University Rankings® 2018 achieving  50 point and  moving from  category  (651-700) in 2017 to a higher category (601-650) in 2018.. During his visit to the Electronic Microscopy Laboratory, he received a briefing from the Dean of the Nanotechnology Institute, Dr. Mohammed Al-Fandi, on the projects of automating nanorobot systems for structural processing within the electronic microscope, and the cancer-cell exploring dynamic nanorobot.

 His Highness was accompanied by the Director of the Office of the Crown Prince, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Crown Prince Foundation and the Acting Executive Director of the Crown Prince Foundation.  ​

A graduate of Mechanical Engineering from the Jordan University of Science and Technology and a member of the CPF's Masar Initiative, Eng. Ahmed Fares, said that he had acquired practical experience that enabled him and his colleagues to design the special structure of the mini-satellite. He pointed out that the initiative provided him with the opportunity to interact with Jordanian students from different universities and foreign experts in the field of satellite industry, in addition to enabling him and his colleagues to acquire experiences and skills that qualify them to enter the labor market in various engineering fields.
