Vision

The Department of English for Applied studies contributes to JUST vision to become an international center for English language education, research, service, and cultural programs. It aims to refine each of the two areas of its mission by concentrating its resources on the development of its strengths and areas of highest potential growth. The department aims to provide programs of the highest quality to graduate effective students who can address challenges of the new century. In addition, it devotes itself to the promotion of advanced research in English language teaching, and theoretical and applied linguistics, as well as to the training of research-oriented college instructors of English. Therefore it commits itself to promoting faculty development in such areas as research, publication, creative work, and other professional activities for the advancement of knowledge and pedagogy.

Mission

The mission of the Department of English for Applied Studies is to promote the knowledge and understanding of English Language from both theoretical and applied perspectives. The Department contributes to the University's undergraduate and graduate education in three major ways. It offers B.A. degree in ESP, and M.A degree in Applied Linguistics, and general courses to all university students as well. The mission of the B.A. program in ESP is to educate students to be highly competent professionals, whose teaching, training and testing covers all skill areas at all levels of English, in a wide variety of settings, and for various occupational purposes. It seeks to provide students with high-quality instruction in applied sub-disciplines of the English language that would allow them to use English efficiently and to be able to pursue different positions in well-established institutions such as embassies, UN agencies, schools, companies, hospitals, etc. The department also contributes to the University's graduate mission by providing professional training through its Master's degree in Applied Linguistics. The MA in Applied Linguistics is designed for students who want a broad coverage of basic areas in Linguistics, either as a background for teaching at the undergraduate or graduate levels, as preparation for a Ph.D. program in Linguistics or other related areas, or as preparation for applied work in Linguistics.
