Objectives of the M.A. program:

The M.A program in Applied Linguistics aims at:

1. Enabling students to acquire basic and advanced analytic skills in linguistics and to educate them broadly in the field of applied linguistics and its relation to other disciplines.
2. Helping students acquire solid knowledge concerning the learning, use, users, and teaching of languages; as such it deals within its scope with a variety of subjects. The department , therefore, offers courses in several core areas of linguistic inquiry: phonology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics, applied linguistics, research methodology, among other subjects.
3. Helping students specializing in English language teaching, translation, or other areas of linguistics to acquire essential knowledge relevant to their fields of work. The department's stance, thus, is that language teachers, translators and so on are most successful when they not only have practical experience but also a solid theoretical and empirical understanding of the nature of language, the nature of language use, and the nature of language acquisition.
4. Offering its students a broad theoretical perspective, as well as the basic tools and methods of academic research. So it attempts to engage students and faculty in linguistic theory and empirical research.
5. Providing students with culturally appropriate applied training in several specific sub-fields so that they can function successfully as professionals in a variety of settings.
6. Preparing students for pursuing their PhD degrees in linguistics or other related areas.
