Welcome to the BME Department

B.Sc degree program in Biomedical Engineering (BME)at Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) has been accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of ABET, Inc., the recognized accreditor of college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering, and technology. ABET accreditation demonstrates a program's commitment to providing its students with a quality education. The BME program at JUST is the first non-USA program of its kind to be accredited by the EAC of ABET, Inc.

The BME Department at JUST was founded in 1998 to maintain pace with global developments in the fields  of technology pertaining to healthcare and biomedical equipment. The Department provides hospitals and health centers with qualified engineers to cope with modern medical equipments in the areas  of  diagnosis,    therapy, rehabilitation, and research that may aid the development and prosperity of this field in Jordan. The Department is the first department of its kind in Jordan.

The BME Department offers a program that leads to a B.Sc. degree in Biomedical Engineering. The curriculum has been prepared to fit the needs of the local medical community; therefore it focuses on medical instruments and their uses, development and maintenance.

The BME Department is highly recognized by different academic and professional institutions in Jordan and the Middle East. To boost its academic performance and to stand in connection with the world's technological developments, the Department has offered many scholarships for postgraduate studies in the USA.

The BME Department has a professional staff in various aspects of biomedical Engineering whose degrees were awarded by reputable universities around the world.

The BME Department provides various aspects in theoretical and practical teaching topics, graduation projects and seminars.

Due to world developments in the field of biomedical engineering and the growing demands in medical centers in Jordan, procedures were taken to upgrade curriculum,  performance,  and  facilities.  Preparations  were  made  for opening laboratories for biomedical electronics, biomaterials, and computers in  medicine.  There  are  also  future plans to initiate a course in equipment maintenance.

Accreditation is a voluntary, peer-review  process that  requires  programs to   undergo  Comprehensive, periodic evaluations. The evaluations, conducted by teams of volunteer Professionals  working in  industry,  government, academe, and private practice within the ABET disciplines; focus on program curricula, faculty, facilities, institutional support, and other important areas.

One of the key elements of ABET  accreditation  is  the  requirement  that  programs  continuously  improve  the quality of education provided. As  part  of  this  continuous  improvement  requirement,  programs  set   specific, measurable goals for their students and  graduates,  assess  their  success at  reaching those goals, and improve their programs based on the results of their assessment.

In addition to providing colleges and universities a structured mechanism to assess, evaluate, and improve their programs,  accreditation  also  helps  students   and  their  parents  choose  quality   college   programs,  enables employers and graduate schools  to  recruit  graduates  they know are well-prepared, and is used by registration, licensure, and certification boards to screen applicants.

ABET is a not-for- profit  organization, owned and operated  by  its  more  than  25  professional  and  technical member societies. An internationally  respected  organization  with  some  1,500  volunteers,  ABET  has set the higher-educational standards in its fields for nearly 75 years.

More information about ABET, its member societies, and the evaluation criteria used to accredit programs can

Having its roots at Yarmouk University in Irbid, JUST emerged as an independent  university  on  September 1, 1986. JUST detached five faculties from Yarmouk University to form its academic nucleus.  These  faculties are: Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Nursing and Faculty of Engineering. Consecutively added are the Faculties of Science and  Arts,  Medical  Applied  Sciences,  Veterinary  Medicine, Computer and Information Technology, and Agriculture.

The University currently hosts ten faculties in addition to the Faculty  of  Graduate  Studies  and  Deanship  of Research. Right from the beginning, JUST has established itself as a distinct educational institution  for  higher education since 1986.

This prestigious university was established with the aim of producing outstanding  professionals  in medicine, engineering, information technology, and related fields. JUST academic programs have witnessed considerable development. In 2007,  the  University  awarded  51  undergraduate  and  95  graduate  degrees. The  University Campus is 70 km north of Amman, the  capital  of  Jordan,  and  20 km  east  of  Irbid  City.  The 11-km2  campus
features spacious modern buildings that  were  constructed  according  to  the latest architectural designs. The campus includes the University farm, 12 auditoriums, a concert hall, fine arts galleries, museums,  8  restaurants,
a housing complex, libraries, gymnasiums, tennis courts, and a 7000-seat football stadium.

The JUST vision is "to become an international university by 2010"and its mission stems  from  its  recognition
of its obligations to contribute to the development of  human  and  material  resources  of  Jordan  through  the proper pursuit of knowledge and the achievement of  academic  excellence.  And,  in  compliance  with dictated objectives as contained  in  the  constitution  of  the  University,  JUST  endeavors  to  realize  these  ambitions, including:

  • Offering  of  specialized  higher  education  in  established  and  emerging  disciplines  of   science  and   technology.

  • Preparation of properly trained human resources in  areas  of  science  and  technology,  with  particular emphasis on quality programs.

  • Expansion of  graduate  studies,  and  support  of  scientific  research  and  professional  studies  in  the    pursuit of promoting  community  service  and  bilateral  links  with  industry.  And  not  least  of all, the development of student personality   traits  of national  pride  and  professional  ethics  via  a  balanced program of extracurricular  activities  envisaged  to  form  an  integral  part  of  student  life  on  campus.

Thus, JUST perseveres to develop  and  enhance  its  resources  in  order  to  successfully  fulfill  its  intended
mission, which resides in the accomplishments of three basic tasks of responsibility:

  • Provision of sound professional education and training at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

  • Provision for mission-oriented research in support of Jordan's national developmental plans.

  • Promoting interaction with the community through the provision of community service to Jordan  and   the region in response to changing and renewed demands.
