Letter from the Department Chair
Making Greater Places and Bettering Quality and Equity of Life
The Department of Urban Planning (DUP) is part of the College of Architecture and Design at JUST. It offers a Bachelors degree in Urban Planning as well as a Masters degree in Urban Planning and Studies. In the first two years of the bachelor's degree, our students share the same fundamental courses with that of the Department of Architecture. This is made in order to make sure that a preliminary design foundation is fulfilled after which students are directed to take classes in Urban Planning. The curriculum of DUP is a program structured to encompass a multitude of classes pertaining to a wholesome knowledge in urban planning. Our faculty members have varied areas of interests which include Urban Planning, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, Housing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Conservation, and Urban Anthropology.
Subsequent accelerating growth rates in modern cities emphasized the need for integrated action plans for vernacular and future urbanism and urged the need to provide essential remedies for inherited problems. Some cities in Jordan are historical settlements dating back to prehistory, and others are emergent settlements reflecting the need to dwell in certain localities. However, most of these cities developed by contiguous cellular growth with little planning. These facts inflicted the quality of life in cities of the region as well.
Our mission is to provide the society with professional planners who will develop the urban environment of this region of the world. The department takes on its responsibilities by equipping students with skills, and hands-on experiences to critically develop and promote their creativity and future career knowledge. This mission is carried out by a team of expertise that are educated and furnished to create the change to enhance life and equity in modern cities.
We aspire to fashion the links between the department and the market by fulfilling their needs with the acute planners. This is made possible; by connecting with the practice and governmental organizations; by carrying out research and developmental plans that will elevate quality and equity of life in Jordan and the region; by updating the requirements of the time and meeting the immerging needs of the public; by preparing for the future ethics; by engaging in critical urban planning problems; and by providing creative solutions for the coiling forecasts.
We care for the future and remedy the present; we are committed to Creating Better Places and to Bettering the Quality of Life; and we are departing to nurture the Capacity to Create and Connect to the World.
